Jeff the Trainer's Top Ten Tips for Beginning an Exercise Program

1.        Perform a warmup before starting your routine and perform a warmdown
plus stretching  at the end of the routine.

2.        Aim for three to four sessions of some type
of cardiovascular exercise per week.  Generally
speaking, each session might be 15-30 minutes long
at the beginning.  Exercise at a light to moderate
intensity and gradually build up the duration
and intensity of the sessions over time.

3.        Aim for two-three sessions of strength training per week.  Address all major
muscle groups of the upper body and lower body.  Gradually increase the
difficulty/intensity of the strength sessions over time.  Follow sound form and
technique.

4.        Ensure that you are adequately hydrated, especially
in hot Virginia summer-time weather.  Drink cold water instead
of sugar-laden sports drinks.

5.        Never exercise through joint/muscle pain of a medical
nature.  Consult your family physician with any concerns.

6.        Eat a healthy, balanced diet.  Generally, watch out for excessive intake of
sweets, saturated fat, and alcohol.

7.        Choose exercises that you enjoy and that will keep you coming back for
workouts.  (Ex: For cardiovascular exercise, if you dislike a stationary bike, choose
something else such as walking or stair climbing).

8.        Maintain a positive attitude and mentally visualize your coming success at
becoming healthier and more fit.

9.        Write down a list of realistic short term and long term fitness goals.  Keep
the list where you can see it everyday.

10.        Do not skip workouts!
Doing 50% of your  routine
because of time constraints is
much better than doing nothing
for that day.
